Some of these musical works and compositions have seldom been heard; some are new works commissioned for the series. For the participating artists, the connection between visual arts and music \u2013 between visual and acoustic experience \u2013 is an integral component of their artistic work. Transdisciplinary and structural transformation, and the creation of dissonance and counterpoint, all play a role.<\/p>\n<p>The thematic focus on the border zone between music and visual art has been a guiding concept for Freunde Guter Musik Berlin since its inception. The association had just been founded in 1983 when it was invited to plan a program of events to accompany the Berlin exhibition \u00bbDer Hang zum Gesamtkunstwerk\u00ab by Harald Szeemann. For its 10th anniversary in 1993, Freunde realized a number of larger projects in conjunction with Christos Joachimides&#8216; Berlin exhibition \u00bbAmerikanische Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert\u00ab.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1997 Freunde Guter Musik Berlin has maintained an ongoing collaboration with the Nationalgalerie, \u00a0Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Besides curating individual events, Freunde put together an extensive program of performances with young British artists and musicians for the 1998\/99 exhibition \u00bbSensation\u00ab. The series \u00bbMusikwerke Bildender K\u00fcnstler\u00ab (Works of Music by Visual Artists), initiated in 1999 with the Nationalgalerie and other partners, has so far presented concert performances of musical works and installations by Hanne Darboven, Yves Klein, Hermann Nitsch, Rodney Graham, Stephen Prina, Lawrence Weiner \/ Peter Gordon, Christian Marclay, K\u00e4the Kruse, Carsten Nicolai, Janet Cardiff &amp; George Bures Miller, Cory Arcangel, Egill S\u00e6bj\u00f6rnsson &amp; Marcia Moraes, Ryoji Ikeda, Susan Philipsz,\u00a0Sa\u00e2dane Afif, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Jorinde Voigt, and Cevdet Erek.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWorks of Music by Visual Artists\u00ab is a series by\u00a0Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V. in cooperation with\u00a0Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and 2002-2014 with MaerzMusik \u2013 Festival of Contemporary Music | Berliner Festspiele.<\/p>\n<p>Made possible by funding from Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie (1999, 2000, 2002),\u00a0Hauptstadtkulturfonds (2000, 2005, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2016), Schering Stiftung (2005, 2012, 2014, 2016), Initiative Neue Musik Berlin e.V.
