With its shifting emphasis on different regions and themes, the festival has developed into a focal point for contemporary music and performance in Berlin. It presents soloists and ensembles who operate in the thickets between »new« and »ethnic« music, rock and jazz, and who cross boundaries between the arts: music and performance by big-city natives – the transgressors, troublemakers and trappers in the crossfire of cultures and styles. It’s not about trends, but about the urban and the aboriginal. Both are experiencing transformations far from the beaten track and searching for individual solutions. Progressive urban-industrial cultural forms undergo dialectical, even ironic refractions, reverting to supposedly outdated modes, to the »primitive« and »alien«, the »archaic« and »anarchistic«, to »nature« and »ritual«. These experimental projects are juxtaposed with traditional styles of ethnic music that have developed outside the urban context, so that the hybrid forms of musical expression from the cities appear as if illuminated in relief.

Chronology

30.09. – 21.10.1985
URBANE ABORIGINALE
(New York/London/Köln/Berlin)
mit Fast Forward und Band, Elliott Sharp, Arnold Dreyblatt, C.
