URBAN + ABORIGINAL XVI now presents old and new music from Korea in a wide-ranging series of events. Concerts featuring significant works in the history of Korean music offer opportunities to experience, as never before, the rich musical legacy of the court and the literati in complete versions and authentic musical form. Included in the festival are the first full-length performances in Germany of the classic ensemble suite Kajin hoesang, the aristocratic-erudite song cycle Yeochang gagok and the five-hour-long p’ansori „Simchong-ga“ (epic song passed down in the oral tradition, a cross between folk music and art music).

To generate an exciting dialogue with those works, the festival introduces vanguard South Korean contemporary composers who have eloquently transcended the dichotomy between western-modern and oriental-traditional concepts. The festival also presents current trends in pop and electronic music from the Seoul underground, improvised music and performances, folk songs and modern p’ansori. In addition, a media lounge provides a sense of the everyday musical environment of Korea via Internet live-streaming of radio stations playing pop and traditional music, and via video clips and computer art. In a roundtable discussion, the composers will delve into the background of the musical culture of Korea, a culture as multi-layered as it is contradictory.

URBAN + ABORIGINAL XVI continues its long-standing collaboration with the Berliner Kulturveranstaltungs-GmbH, and Podewil will again host the thirteen November concerts. This year, for the first time, the five ensembles appearing in Berlin will also go on tour to Utrecht, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Leipzig. The festival marks the beginning of the Year of Korea 2005, during which the country presents itself at numerous cultural, political and business events throughout Germany. Korea is the focal point of the Asia Pacific Weeks 2005.

A performance series by Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V. in cooperation with the Berliner Kulturveranstaltungs-GmbH / Podewil.
