Lagos Sessions – live performance
Lagos- and Berlin-based Nigerian sound and installation artist Emeka Ogboh uses field recordings to explore the acoustic infrastructure of cities as cosmopolitan spaces, each with its own history and idiosyncratic character. Since 2008, he has been sonically documenting and archiving the pulsing African megametropolis of Lagos. With artistic virtuosity, Ogboh shapes the field recordings from various places in the city into a kind of auditory topography, which allows an image of the city to emerge in the mind of the listener. In his Lagos Soundscapes project, the city comes to life as a sonic landscape which then, as a sound installation transferred to other places, can be experienced in new contexts. In 2021, Emeka Ogboh began to release his compositions also on records, in which he skillfully combines layers of ambient electronics, dance music and field recordings from the city of Lagos. His debut album Beyond the Yellow Haze appeared on Ostgut Ton’s sub-label A-TON, his second album 6°30′33.372″N 3°22′0.66″E on his own label Danfotronics, founded in 2022. After Emeka Ogboh has been DJing on and off in recent years, this is one of his first appearances with a live version of his Lagos Sessions. (Photo: Emeka Ogboh)
