Works of Music by Visual Artists
A series of events featuring performances and exhibitions
of musical works and compositions by visual artists
The series »Works of Music by Visual Artists« presents pieces by artists who are internationally known as visual artists. Some of these musical works and compositions have seldom been heard; some are new works commissioned for the series. For the participating artists, the connection between visual arts and music – between visual and acoustic experience – is an integral component of their artistic work. Transdisciplinary and structural transformation, and the creation of dissonance and counterpoint, all play a role.
The thematic focus on the border zone between music and visual art has been a guiding concept for Freunde Guter Musik Berlin since its inception. The association had just been founded in 1983 when it was invited to plan a program of events to accompany the Berlin exhibition »Der Hang zum Gesamtkunstwerk« by Harald Szeemann. For its 10th anniversary in 1993, Freunde realized a number of larger projects in conjunction with Christos Joachimides’ Berlin exhibition »Amerikanische Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert«.
Since 1997 Freunde Guter Musik Berlin has maintained an ongoing collaboration with the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Besides curating individual events, Freunde put together an extensive program of performances with young British artists and musicians for the 1998/99 exhibition »Sensation«. The series »Musikwerke Bildender Künstler« (Works of Music by Visual Artists), initiated in 1999 with the Nationalgalerie and other partners, has so far presented concert performances of musical works and installations by Hanne Darboven, Yves Klein, Hermann Nitsch, Rodney Graham, Stephen Prina, Lawrence Weiner / Peter Gordon, Christian Marclay, Käthe Kruse, Carsten Nicolai, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Cory Arcangel, Egill Sæbjörnsson & Marcia Moraes, Ryoji Ikeda, Susan Philipsz, Saâdane Afif, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Jorinde Voigt, and Cevdet Erek.
»Works of Music by Visual Artists« is a series by Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V. in cooperation with Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and 2002-2014 with MaerzMusik – Festival of Contemporary Music | Berliner Festspiele.
