Raed Yassin
Phantom Orchestra – solo performance with 12 turntables and 42 records

Phantom Orchestra by Lebanese artist and musician Raed Yassin is a collective project that captures and archives a particular musical moment in recent history: the sounds of experimental improvisers created in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic. In collaboration with the Morphine Records label, Yassin invited over 40 international musicians – many of whom are affiliated with the Echtzeitmusik scene in Berlin – to play solo sets in the Morphine studio. The recordings were then pressed as one-of-a-kind vinyl LPs (dubplates). This record archive shapes the pool of improvisational “phantom” solos, which Yassin combines into an orchestral arrangement live on 12 turntables. The initially isolated solos in this way form a virtual orchestra of turntables, creating a grand composition in real time – which emerges, “conducted” by Yassin, as a spontaneous live mix. For Raed Yassin, the project is also a reflection on and a gesture of solidarity in the midst of our present situation, as we are stepping out of isolation, learning anew how we might live in the world together.
